The collection also has several unique samples. One of them is the “overland” landscape painting by I.K. Aivazovskiy “The Traveling Wagon-Train in Winter”. The artist is known across the world as a sea-scape painter but once in his life he made an untypical work. Aivazovskiy painted a cycle of 4 paintings-seasons of the year in Russia. The winter season painting by the artist is stored here, in the Smolensk Art Gallery.
Amongst the rare Europeans art samples, there is a painting “Madonna with a Baby” by an unknown Dutch author of the XV century.
The large collection of Western European artisans is composed of Italian, Netherlanders, Flemish, and Hollandaise paintings from the Renaissance period. The name of some of the painters, such as Bernardo Strozzi, Giovanni Pellegrini, Simon Luteheis, Jan Asselein, are rarely found in Russian provincial collections. An undeniable value is the paintings by the Spanish artisans of the XVII century, one of whom belongs to the hand of Francisco de Surbanna. German art is represented by numerous works from landscape painters of the Munich school, French- by artists ranging from rococo to impressionism styles.
