Smolensk Fortress

The amazing scenery of the city of Smolensk that is spilled over the picturesque hills of the Dnieper Valley can be seen from the train windows on the railway between Moscow and the European capitals. Over the city stands the Assumption Cathedral, surrounding by medieval walls and towers of the Smolensk fortress. Both structures are not only architectural, but also historical monuments-symbols of the heroic 20-month defense of the city in 1609-1611 against the 30 thousand-strong army of the Polish King Sigismund III. This defense played an important role on the future liberation of Moscow from the Polish conquerors in 1612 and in the formation of the Russian state.

This defense played an important role on the future liberation of Moscow from the Polish conquerors in 1612 and in the formation of the Russian state.
In the beginning of the XVII century, after the construction of the stone fortress, Smolensk did not only become a literal city-fortress of the Western border but an actual one as well.
Smolensk city wall is the longest fortified structure in Europe. Built in 1596-1602 by a Russian architect Feodor Kon, in 1602 the length of the wall (including its towers) was 6.5 km, and the height varying from 13m to 19 m, with thickness of up to 6 m. Inside the walls was constructed a serious of passages and storage areas for ammunition. Beneath the walls was created a system of galleries which were used as listening outposts to detect attempts of mining and building of underground passages by the enemy.
In four centuries the Smolensk Fortress withstood three sieges during the Polish-Russian Wars of the XVII century and the 2-day assault by Napoleon’s Army in 1812. The city fortress has never been seized by an assault in its history.
In the modern times, there are 17 towers still standing out of the original 38, and the total length of the city walls is 3.5 km. In 2013 under the initiative of our company a flash mob was organized to commemorate the 1150 years anniversary of the city’s founding. On that day around 6000 held hands and closed of the perimeter of the City Walls-the symbol of the Smolensk. For several hours a live wall was created! The wall not only holds the past, but the future as well, since every 50 years a message to the future generations is stored here. The substance and the text of the last message will become known on September 25, 2063.
To this day the Smolensk Fortress makes a lasting impression with its grandeur and invincibility.
