Smolensk has adopted a nice Moscow tradition: to have a celebratory concert on New Year’s Eve. This concert is different from the regular classical programs, the music sounds especially light and celebratory, and the entire evening turns into a concert-spectacle. The event has remained popular for over 25 years!
Smolensk Philharmonic Hall has over 700 concerts annually and the yearly festival program has world famous performers from Russia and European countries.
A permanent performing group of the Smolensk Philharmonic is the Smolensk Folk orchestra named in honor of V.P. Dubrovsky. The instrumental component of the orchestra has the widely known balalaika, accordion, horns, and even harps. The usual dance composition  of the orchestra is the provoking “Smolensk Gosling”. Performances for the tour groups are done in the actual Philharmonic Hall or in the country estate of the composer M.I. Glinka, a place special for its natural beauty and sounds.
